Kacy Cornett blog 1 Carmilla

Laura falls for Carmilla because Laura is for the most part alone. When she is finally given a companion, she pretty much ignores any faults that Carmilla may possess. Carmilla is beautiful, and has a beautiful voice, which draws people to her. Everyone at the schoss falls for her instantly and they are all glad to have her with them. She is rather charming and mysterious. Laura likes the mysterious nature of her and they become fast friends. She never questions anything weird or sinister about Carmilla. Laura states early on in the story that Carmilla's confidence is what won her over. Carmilla is very confident and she acts like the noble that she was brought up as. Carmilla is slightly seductive, she often kisses Laura's check and caresses her face. She does a lot of small jesters to lull Laura in. Carmilla is very flirtatious, she says to Laura "I have been in love with no one and never shall, unless it should be with you." This resonates with Laura because she isn't use to affection from anyone except her father.
This all leads to the assumption that Laura, her father, and the other residents of the schoss are all naive and a little dim. Carmilla does many things that are strange and no one even thinks twice about them. Laura and her father are too trusting, they believe what they are told. They are asked not to question Carmilla about anything, so they blindly follow this order, making the humans in this story blindly obedient. Even the General blindly follows through with Carmilla's mothers request. He never questions Carmilla (Millarca) about her mother or anything else. In the end this costs him his dear, beautiful niece.

  1. Interesting! I think you're quite right that the reader, at least, sees a lot of clues that the characters seem to miss or ignore. Why do you think they seem so dense? What's Le Fanu up to?
